Case study · Zournaly

A journaling habit that survives an ordinary week.

Zournaly is our own product: an AI-assisted journal for people whose journaling habit keeps slipping. We took it from a stack of paper notebooks to an Android release in closed testing, and ran the launch ourselves.

  • Role

    Product, design, engineering, launch

Four hand-numbered paper notebooks stacked on a desk beside a laptop
Where it came from

It started on paper.

Four notebooks, numbered by hand, filled in bursts and then abandoned for months at a time. The writing was never the problem. Going back to it was. Nothing in them was searchable, nothing connected, and nothing ever turned into something done.

The problem

Journaling apps ask for discipline and give back a wall of text.

People do not quit journaling because writing is hard. They quit because the app makes a blank page feel like homework, then hands the effort back as an archive nobody re-reads.

  • 01

A blank page and no reason to fill it

  • 02

A missed day that reads as failure

  • 03

Entries that pile up and are never revisited

  • 04

Reflection that never turns into anything

The decisions

Four calls that shaped the product.

Every one of them removed something. What is left is the version we were willing to put in front of people.

01

Make capture cost nothing

Text, voice, a photo, or a mood in a single tap. The entry can be one messy line, and the editor never asks for more than the user brought.

02

Let mood be the low door in

On days with no words there is still a check-in: five faces, one tap, filed against the day. It keeps the habit alive when writing does not happen.

03

Turn reflection into something done

The one AI feature that survived: Zournaly reads an entry, spots the thing you meant to do, and offers it as a task beside the writing, never in a separate list to maintain.

04

Reward the return, not the streak

Progress is a short climb up a week, not a number to protect. Break it and you step back one tile. You do not lose the game.

Inside the app

Six screens, doing one job each.

Nothing here is a mockup. These are the screens running in early access today.

  • Zournaly home screen with a mood card and the day's tasks

    Home. Mood first, then today.

  • Zournaly library of journal entries grouped by week

    Library. Entries grouped by week.

  • Zournaly mood timeline listing every check-in by day and time

Mood timeline. Every check-in, in order.

  • Zournaly profile screen with an average-mood chart and earned badges

Profile. A week of mood, and badges.

  • Zournaly streak screen showing a six-day streak

    Streak. Quiet, not loud.

  • Zournaly theme picker showing six light and dark themes

Themes. Six of them, two dark.

Taking it to market

We ran the launch too.

Positioning, the landing page, the store listing and every piece of campaign creative came from the same team that built the app. That is why the promise on the poster is the promise the product keeps.

Outcome

Where it stands.

Zournaly opened to early access on Android in August 2026 and is running in Google Play closed testing, with 146 people writing in it. The next round is about what they keep coming back to, and what we can cut.

  • Released to early-access testers on Android
  • 146 people on the early-access list
  • One AI feature shipped, several cut
  • Landing page, store listing and campaign in-house
What transfers

What this means for your product.
